I spent so much time writing and then even more time putting together emails to publishers in hopes of someone besides me reading what I was writing! Finally it all paid off, well sort of. As a new author, unless you already know somebody that is a famous author, your not getting the book deal of your dreams right out of the gate.
You're going to get a no advance and you market it yourself kind of book deal if you want to be eligible someday for the big advance and the agent markets it for you package. Seriously, you have to build your name as an author and you have to get enough people to read and like your book to make them want to read the next one and create enough interest from your publisher to make you a better deal on the next one or have better publishers interested.
For the new author, hoping that first book is going to go big, get on the internet and go to work.
Search the internet for a list of all of the major newspapers and then keeping searching their main home page until you find "contact us" and then keep digging until you get a book review, book editor, book section writer, etc. and make a list of all of these email addresses. You will need these for your official press release. Never depend on a publisher that does not give you an advance to do enough press for you, especially if you don't have an agent that you are talking to daily.
Set up a website where you promote the book, the author, at least one character in the book, blogging and social networking. I use webs.com and I love them. It has good tracking so you can see if you are getting traffic.
Use Facebook to tell everyone you know that you are a published author now and how to find your website.
Use Facebook to LIKE your publisher's Facebook and any and all writer, published author, etc. communities that you can find on Facebook. Steps 3 and 4 together will grow your friend list and you should have your website blog set up to feed to your Facebook page by using networked blogging site. Webs will offer it to you while you build your site.
Join EzineArticles and write write write! Great networking place and you get to add the website location at the bottom of every article you submit, no matter what it is about.
Get the press release ready, announce the immediate release of your website and the future date of your book and send it out on every free press release site you can find and to all of those email addresses you collected in step one.
